Sega anniversary and Nintendo Switch best games

August 2019 marks the 30^th anniversary of the introduction of the Sega Genesis into the US market.

Until then, Nintendo had dominated and Sega had a niche market in Japan, under a different name – the Mega Drive. However, games developers had been locked into exclusive contracts to supply Nintendo, which at that point had 95% of the console market.

With the US launch of Sega Genesis this was to change and the Guardian has a fascinating account of the process for those of you interested in gaming history.

Nintendo, however, is far from struggling and its launch of the Nintendo Switch has been a massive success.

Wired’s Will Bedingfield has compiled a list of the 11 all-time best Switch games.  This is a selection, but you can see the full list here.

Bedingfield puts the Legend of Zelda in his number one slot, because, he says: “Sensing that Zelda’s linear formula had grown stale in comparison to Bethesda and Rockstar-esque open-world offerings, Nintendo went back to the proverbial drawing board and totally reimagined its flagship series. And as is often its want, they created the greatest open-world game of all time.”

Of course, no Nintendo games list would be complete without Super Mario and this is his second choice, Super Mario Odyssey, which “guides Mario through landscapes of boundless imagination”.

Number three is Smash Brothers Ultimate, which allows gamers to set up battles between their favourite characters and next on the list is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, where you can drive your favourite Nintendo characters around your favourite Nintendo locales, not to mention firing shells at your hated competitors.
